Although with a modern vehicle, it should be able to go near – 100,000 miles without the plugs showing much damage. The spark plugs themselves can go bad over time. The coil or coil packs need to be strong. It relies on data from the crank and cam sensors to time the spark properly. Your ignition system is more than just the spark plugs. Here are the most likely causes of sputtering: This can radically reduce the time it takes you to diagnose the problem.Īny failure in the process listed above can lead to a sputtering engine. It is then expelled through the exhaust, where it is then scrubbed by the catalytic converter before being sent through the exhaust pipe.īefore diving into our list of the most common reasons that a Cherokee’s engine sputters, make sure to check for trouble codes if you have a check engine light on. Once compressed, the mixture it is ignited by the spark plugs. The air is then guided into the cylinder where fuel is added and compressed. It pulls in air (where it is measured by the mass airflow sensor). If your Jeep Cherokee has a sputter, it is most likely going to be caused by bad fuel system, ignition system, MAF sensor, or bad catalytic converter. Summit Racing also offers a full line of Haynes Repair Manuals.A sputtering engine can indicate a number of problems. Since the XJ is 25 years old-and we’re not trying to restore it back to showroom fresh, just able to run the trails and cruise the highways and byways-we chose the remanufactured injectors. Read through all the instructions a couple times before you begin the procedure, and try to identify each component as it’s mentioned. For instance, we used a Haynes Repair Manual for the Jeep Wrangler, 1987 through 2008, which uses the same 4.0L straight six as the 1990 Cherokee Laredo (the vehicle we used for photography).Īuthor’s Note: Exchanging the injectors will be the same for all Jeep 4.0L engines, only the external accessories might be different and/or in different locations.Īlthough we found that the instructions in our Haynes Repair Manual were very complete and excellent, there were a few steps that we felt were unnecessary. Beneath the engine it looked like the fuel pump was pumping gas directly on the ground with none getting to the cylinders! We killed the engine immediately! The new O-rings had quit working. While it was warming up we decided the check for fuel leaks. We parked the Cherokee and forgot about it until the next morning. It was at night and all we noticed was a very slight gas odor so we thought it was a minor leak back at the fuel tank. This is how we discovered our 1990 Cherokee’s injectors were bad they were spraying more fuel on the engine than in the engine. But you’ll still need a good shop manual. And if you can change the O-rings, you can change the injectors. If your fuel system is leaking all over the intake manifold through the injectors, you’ll need to replace the injectors. O-rings might do the job but usually they are only a temporary fix. If you’re experiencing leaking fuel injectors, you might think new O-rings will correct your engine’s fuel delivery problems, but you’d probably be wrong.
